DON’T FIRE LETTERMAN, BUT DON’T WATCH HIM EITHER.

I don’t know what to tell you about the Letterman deal other than firing him over his bad awful horrendous joke is not a good idea. I’ve been there, I know.

Letterman apologized. Good for him. He says he’s going to watch it in the future. Good for him.

Remember firing him imposes no economic pain. CBS would pay his contract, just as it paid Imus’. In that case Imus got about $20 million for sitting at home. Letterman’s contract is probably richer than that.

So firing him is just clamping down on free speech, even bad free speech. We’ve got enough of that, don’t we?

If you don’t like what he did, don’t watch him.

That’s going to be tough if you like to stay up late and watch the comedians. Letterman got a gift when Jay quit.

Conan’s show is … well, it’s not been so good these first few days. Letterman caught a break.

Besides all this hell raising is probably giving Dave a boost in the ratings.

There is even a school of thought that he and his joke staff did it on purpose.

When Imus got in trouble a few years ago for telling a sexual joke about President Bill Clinton there was a giant uproar and people calling for him to be fired.

During that firestorm he remarked, “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

That may be how Dave feels.
