Jay-Z and The Beatles. It doesn’t get any bigger than that in this week’s FOXLight Music Release roundup.
Abbey Road engineers spent the last four years remastering all of the Beatles albums, and they all drop this week; individually, with the first four finally back in stereo; and two boxed sets, one with all the stereo albums plus a DVD of documentaries, and one with all the albums originally released in mono, originally a limited run, now extended due to overwhelming demand.
Jay-Z drops The Blueprint 3, produced by Hova and Kanye West, and promising to be “the death of Auto-Tune, the end of the ringtone”. I say, “Good riddance!”
Phish return with their latest reunion album, Joy, with 10 road-tested tracks said to be among their best ever.
Also out this week…
The first new music in 35 years from Brazilian freak-outs Os Mutantes, titled Haih Or Amortecedor.
Love Drunk is the latest from Boys Like Girls
Sound The Alarm is the first in six years from Howie Day
A Fine Frenzy follow up their 2007 debut with Bomb in a Birdcage
Sondre Lerche continues his attempt to be the Norwegian Elvis Costello with the ultra-eclectic and oh-so-hip Heartbeat Radio
The 16th album in 25 years from Yo La Tengo is titled, simply, Popular Songs
Rodrigo y Gabriela drop their latest, 11:11, or shall I say Once:Once
And catalog and compilations this week include…
The final stand from the soon-to-be-solo Brooks & Dunn, #1 Hits…and then some
The Essential Janis Ian corrals 31 tracks, or shall I say “At Seventeen” and 30 others on 2 CDs.
And piggybacking on the Beatles remasters, 3 from Julian Lennon get re-released: 1986’s The Secret Value of Daydreaming, 1989’s Mr. Jordan and 1991’s Help Yourself.
