Sarah Palin fans are turning out in huge numbers in Grand Rapids. Some of my Twitter followers have been in line since the crack of dawn. About 1,000 people are standing in line outside the Barnes and Noble according to @soccersealusa. Hundreds of fans erupted with cheers, “Sarah, Sarah” as they waited to get an autographed copy of her book.

“She’s a gorgeous woman who shoots moose,” Lucy Vigmustad told the Grand Rapids Press. “How do you not like that? She’s tough and loyal and tells the truth.” Vigmustad, 19, was the first person in a very long line at the Woodland Mall.

“Something about Sarah Palin, she brings a new energy to politics,” said Tyler, an Ohio State University student who made the trek. “I’ve been in line since 4:30 a.m.”

“Going Rogue” follows Palin’s life from childhood to her departure last summer as Alaska governor. She also writes about her faith in Christ.

Fans seem undeterred by the dozens of negative reviews of the book in the mainstream media. The Associated Press reportedly assigned 11 reporters to fact-check her book. However, none were assigned to fact-check books written by President Obama and Vice President Biden.

Instead, he’s come under fire from Allentown, Pa.’s biggest union boss who wants to investigate the underage do-gooder after he unknowingly ruffled union feathers.

Anderson has logged in more than 200 hours to clear a 1,000-foot walking path along the Lehigh River. “I decided to do my part in completing this part of the trail,” he told the Morning Call newspaper. “In that way, others could enjoy walking along the river.”

But his good deed has drawn fire from the Service Employees International Union. President Nick Balzano threatened to investigate the 17-year-old high school junior.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” he reportedly to the city council.

Last July, the city decided to lay off 39 union members who work in the Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments. And the young Boy Scout was doing work that typically would’ve been handled by union employees.

City Hall has decided to step into the fray as the teenager faces the wrath of a scorned union. “We would hope that the well-intentioned efforts of an Eagle Scout candidate would not be challenged by the union,” Mayor Ed Pawlowski wrote in an e-mail to the local newspaper. “This young man is performing a great service to the community.”

The union boss said he’s not targeting the Boy Scouts and stressed that it’s not personal. Nevertheless, he’s playing hardball.

“No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path,” Balzano said.

In other words, at least in Allentown, the only legal hoe is a union hoe.

Lyman was a place where most everyone worked at Pacific Mills, drank Coca-Colas at the local drug store and worshipped at the Methodist or Baptist church. Everyone who lived there was practically family and Lyman is where my people came from.

And for two weeks in the autumn of 1943, the people of Lyman, South Carolina would embrace my family through one of the more difficult periods of World War Two.

The date was October 14, 1943. The seasonal change was well underway and the leaves in South Carolina’s upstate were ablaze with shades of amber, yellow and orange. Football is a religion in the South and Lyman was no different. And it had faithful practitioners in my great uncles — Gene and Louie Bolin — the youngest of eight children. My uncles were just teenagers, then, and when then school bell rang that October afternoon, they bolted outside and raced to the football field.

It wasn’t long until an unfamiliar car drove up alongside the field and out stepped the Reverend Wallace Fridy, the town’s Methodist minister. He walked over to Gene and Louie and told them to get in the car. He had news to share with them from overseas — their older brother had been shot down and was missing in action.

Second Lt. Brunson Bolin was known and loved by everyone in Lyman. Brunson was such a horribly formal name so his brothers and sisters opted, instead, to call him Bunny. The name stuck and folks around town became endeared to the boy with dark, wavy hair and blue eyes who hardly ever said a word. Bunny distinguished himself in sports, from basketball to baseball and when war broke out, he was determined to join the fray along with his two brothers — Don — who flew B-24s in the South Pacific — and “Chico” — a fighting Devil Dog who would eventually be wounded at Iwo Jima.

Bunny was just 18 years old when he volunteered — deciding to join what was then known as the Army Air Force. Within months, he was training to be a pilot Bunny flew a B-17 — known as the Flying Fortress. His was named the Lazy Baby.

The air war over Germany was brutal. American bombers were flying so far into the country, they weren’t able to have fighter escorts — many never made it back home. Bunny was on his seventh mission — flying as a co-pilot. Their mission was to take out a ball-bearing factory on the infamous Schweinfurt Raid. They had just dropped their bombs when the plane was attacked. The left board engine was on fire, communication systems were shot to hell and the navigator was mortally wounded. The situation looked grim and the pilot ordered everyone to bail out.

The letter came to my great-grandparents by standard telegram — from the Defense Department. Bunny was declared missing in action. The town and our family was shaken by the news. Rev. Fridy penned a loving prayer that appeared on the front page of The Advocate, Lyman’s newspaper. It read in part:

“O merciful God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for him reported missing in action we would pray. His life was so fine and clean; his nature so friendly and lovable; his ideals so lofty and noble. It is hard for us to believe that he is gone, for surely great plans were Thine for his life.”

The prayer petitioned the Almighty to spare Bunny’s life — and two weeks later — our family received word of a mixed blessing. Bunny was indeed alive, but he was captured by the Germans.

With the plane in distress, Bunny jumped from the bomb bay — he slammed into one of the doors breaking most of his ribs. As he tumbled towards the earth, Bunny stretched back and noticed holes popping up inside his parachute. He looked down to find a group of German farmers taking shots at him. The only thing that saved his life was a German Army Corporal who got to him before the farmers did. And in the middle of a huge hay field, Bunny Bolin from Lyman, South Carolina, was captured. He would spend the next 18 months as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III in what was then known as Sagan, Poland.

After the war, Uncle Bunny returned to Lyman where the towns people gave him hero’s welcome. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Air Medal for his service to our nation. He married Hazel, a girl who lived down the street. She said whenever you saw Bunny in his uniform, you just thought he was the best looking boy you’d ever seen in your life. They’ve been married for 59 years, raising three children and eight grandchildren. After the war, he took a job with Delta Air Lines — where he served for years with distinction. And today, dozens of years after his incarceration in a prisoner of war camp, Bunny lives in Tyrone, Georgia. He is, in my estimation, an American hero.

We are a free nation because of people like Brunson Bolin — men and women who’ve answered freedom’s call to defend this land against those who despise and reject the belief that all men are created equal. And on this Veterans Day, we honor their sacrifice. We give thanks for those among us willing to take up arms and shed their blood so that this nation may live in peace.
And we also honor American mothers who’ve given their sons and daughters to Liberty’s cause.

This Veterans Day, I hope you take a moment and thank those who are serving our nation. Perhaps you could visit a V.A. hospital or offer a prayer on behalf of our soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you see sailors walking down the street, go and shake that person’s hand. Or if you find a group of soldiers eating in a restaurant, why not pick up the tab?

The cost of freedom, my fellow Americans, is great. Today, may we all remember the price.

————————————–

And here’s how you can get involved in this cool project. Over the next month, Pathway Press will donate one book every time one is purchased online exclusively at www.pathwaybookstore.com. All the proceeds go to charity.

“We are honored to have an opportunity to share Todd’s book with the men and women defending our nation,” said Joseph Mirkovich, director of publishing at Pathway Press. “This book has brought happiness and joy to many people and we hope it will bring smiles and encouragement to our soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

Books for Soldiers is a non-profit organization committed to sending free books to the nation’s Armed Forces.

“They Popped My Hood and Found Gravy on the Dipstick” has become a best-seller. Gov. Mike Huckabee wrote the forward.

And I’m also excited to be a part of this for a personal reason. My cousin, Monica, is in the Air Force and is on her way to Afghanistan. Our family has a long history of military service and I’m honored to be able to send these books to our troops.

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me in Christ Jesus,” read one banner – quoting a passage of Scripture from the New Testament. Other banners and slogans encouraged fans and players “to take courage and do it,” according to The Chattanooga Times Free Press. It seems, though, that a local resident took offense and complained. As a result, the school system banned the cheerleaders from displaying any more signs with religious messages.

Denia Reese is the superintendent of schools in Catoosa County, Ga. While she respects and appreciates the teenagers and their faith in Christ, Reese said she must uphold the law. And the school system said the banners are a violation of federal law (specifically the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution).

“Personally, I appreciate this expression of their Christian values; however, as superintendent I have the responsibility of protecting the school district from legal action by groups who do not support their beliefs,” she told the newspaper.

The incident has generated a huge amount of support for the cheerleaders. Hundreds turned out for a rally Tuesday night and a Facebook page has enlisted thousands of members. Even Fort Oglethorpe’s mayor is lending a helping hand. Mayor Ronnie Cobb said he will ask the City Council to support the cheerleaders in their quest.

But school leaders contend the law is the law and it must be followed — to the letter.

In other words — school spirit is okay — invoking the Holy Spirit is not.

In a nutshell, some of the customers said God and groceries don’t mix and they want the crucifix bagged.

For the time being, Culinaria’s parent company, Schnucks, is standing by Mr. Collora. They gave him permission to display the religious symbol. A spokesperson for the company said they did so out of respect for him and his faith.

The ADL said it is not a fight they want to tackle.

It’s worth noting that no one has lodged such complaints against Chinese restaurants for displaying statues of Buddha.

He is the only American to run the half-marathon under one hour. He won the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon in New York City and went on to represent our nation in the Summer Games.

The California native is passionate about running but he’s also passionate about his Christian faith. In his spare time, Hall works with Team World Vision, a ministry that provides clean drinking water to parts of Africa.

Hall tells Fox News Radio’s Todd Starnes that he hopes people will catch a glimpse of heaven on earth when he runs.

“Honestly, I think I connect more with God when I’m running. It’s definitely a very spiritual connection. That’s how it is when you are doing whatever you were created to do.”

Check out Todd’s entire interview with Ryan Hall in this week’s FOX on Faith podcast.
